Rusty Gate is truly a Mountain Retreat, nestled in the Riviersonderend Mountains, with unsurpassed vistas over the Helderstroom valley and Overberg area. The property, spanning 290 hectares, lies adjacent to the Riviersonderend Nature Reserve, abound with mountain fynbos and proteas and offers ample for nature lovers to enjoy.
Less than 120km from Cape Town International Airport (approximately a 90-minute drive along the N2 via Grabouw and Botrivier) this special getaway is conveniently situated midway between Greyton and Villiersdorp.
Cellular (3G and voice) coverage and guest Wi-Fi is available at limited areas of the guest facilities.
Regretfully we do not allow any guests’ pets at Rusty Gate.
ACCOMMODATION
Premium self-catering accommodation to suit the needs of
couples, families and larger groups.
Our country style self-catering accommodation comprises five beautifully furnished cottages that sleep between 4 and 6 people as well as a special communal entertainment unit that sleeps 20 people with the necessary facilities to host large gatherings. You can put your feet up at one of the cottages, opt to connect with friends or family at Eagle’s Eyrie or book the entire venue.
Cottages
The cottages are located on a terrace, lined with majestic pin oak trees overlooking a bubbling creek. Each cottage is private with a walled veranda, but also within comfortable walking distance for groups or families relaxing together.
Eagle’s Eyrie
Eagle’s Eyrie is located on a terrace overlooking the cottages, featuring a majestic view of the Helderstroom valley. With sleeping capacity of up to 20 people it is ideal for larger self-catering gatherings.
Special Occasions
Milestone birthdays, weddings, anniversaries and other special occasions are moments that matter. Rusty Gate is ideal as an extraordinary venue for small intimate gatherings and parties, and also corporate functions or team-building events.

Our guest farm and accommodation include excellent facilities and all the amenities that you will require for a comfortable and relaxing self-catering breakaway. These are just a few provided.
Fully Equipped Accommodation
All our accommodation units provide for comfortable self-catering, equipped with gas hobs, electric ovens, fridge/freezers, microwave ovens, all the crockery, cutlery and utensils you will need and dishwashers (in cottages).
Cosy Fireplaces

All our cottages have fireplaces, and Eagle’s Eyrie has two wood burning stoves for a romantic atmosphere and keeping you warm in winter.
Free Firewood

We cater for the “closet pyromaniacs” and provide free firewood for braai areas and fireplaces at all our accommodation.
Indoor Activities
We provide various board games, puzzles, cards for family fun and books for quiet relaxation in front of the fireplace during inclement weather.
Outdoor Activities
The Recreation Dam with a jetty, grass embankments, kayaks and a zip line for fun in the water or lazy sun soaking.
Explore nature with a hike on one of our six hiking trails.
Recreational mountain biking on various tracks and trails.
Loadshedding Ready
We have a 16KVA generator with sufficient power for guest facilities at Eagle’s Eyrie.
There are rechargeable load shedding LED bulbs in all guest accommodation that will last for at least 4 hours.

What to do at Rusty Gate and Surrounding Areas
Rusty Gate’s location and topography are unique and makes it ideally suitable for outdoor activities in nature. Adjacent to the Riviersonderend Nature Reserve in the mountains, the native fauna and flora promise unforgettable sights and experiences for any nature lover.
At Rusty Gate
We cater to the young, old and in-between with various adventure and/or relaxing activities by offering bird watching, hiking, mountain biking, swimming, paddling and even a foefie-slide (zipline) for the less faint-hearted! For those less active, a leisurely read in a hammock under the pin oak trees or relaxing at the Recreation Dam should do the trick.

For those who like to get around and satisfy their wanderlust needs we are perfectly located. Take a morning or day trip and within an 80km radius from Rusty Gate there is much to explore and enjoy including adventure and other sports, arts and culture, eating out, live entertainment, nature excursions, shopping, wine tasting and much more.
